Incline Bench Press

Incline bench press is a chest press at an incline angle. The compound movement is a great exercise for almost everyone looking to build upper body muscle and strength. A notable exception is people with shoulder problems which could be exacerbated by the incline angle. The incline bench press is going to be used by most as one of the first exercises you will do in a chest or upper body workout.

An Important Note about Incline Benches

A large percentage of incline benches are designed with the major flaw of having an excessive angle. Since the incline bench press is usually being performed as a chest exercise the angle should be no more than 30 degrees for optimal recruitment of the upper chest muscles. This is not to say that the common 45 degree angle for most incline benches is ineffective but it is far from optimal as exercises like military press target the same upper chest muscle fibers. With all this being said, the best option for performing incline bench press is to use an adjustable bench and position it around 30 degrees.
