The biceps are perhaps the most 'famous' of all muscles in the human body.
Nothing says "I work out" more than rolled-up sleeves and bulging, ripped
biceps. All the bodybuilding lingo aside, the biceps have more purposes than
simply looking good on the beach. Other than performing the standard elbow flexion of the average biceps curls,
the biceps are a synergist during all multi-joint
back exercises such as lat pull downs
and rows. The
biceps
brachii muscle is also responsible for stabilization during many functional
movements, especially multi-joint chest and shoulder exercises such as
the bench press or military press.
Muscle Physiology to know before doing Biceps Exercises
You may think that any time you flex your arm you are using the biceps but
this is not the case. Depending on the rotation of the wrist, your
brachialis
or
brachioradialis muscles may also be doing some of the work.
If you
want to ensure you are working your biceps as much as possible which will make
the muscle aesthetically pleasing, you should know that the biceps are isolated
the most when your hand is either supinated or supinating during the motion of
arm flexion.
